SMG Insight’s SportsIndex 2017 Annual Report Launched - Which Events Achieved The Greatest Buzz?

SMG Insight has released its SportsIndex 2017 Annual Report, the fourth in a series of annual reports comparing the UK public’s perception of 60 leading domestic and international sports events. Covering 17 sports sectors simultaneously, SportsIndex measures all 60 events across a range of 16 metrics on a daily basis, including buzz, impression, quality, reputation, brand awareness and consideration.

SMG Insight’s report ranks events by buzz score – the net difference between the amount of positive news and negative news heard by respondents about an event during a 12 month period. In-depth analysis and year-on-year comparisons provide a detailed picture of where the 60 events sit in the current sporting landscape, whilst the ‘Summary by Sport’ section examines results by sporting category.

SportsIndex Headlines:

Five new events enter the Top 10: whilst Rio reigns supreme as the Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games take the top spots, other new entries include:

  • Twenty20 Cricket – English cricket’s NatWest T20 Blast goes from strength to strength, boosting the sport’s popularity.
  • Tour de France – jumps up the rankings following a year-on-year surge in buzz fuelled by the dominance of British cyclists.
  • English Premier League – achieves its best buzz score in four years as major news stories grab the back page headlines.
  • The Wimbledon Championships, last year’s top event, continues to boast a strong and static buzz level, keeping a firm hold on its special place in the British sporting calendar, as does the Six Nations Rugby Championship.
  • Snooker star Ronnie O’Sullivan takes the sport to new heights as the World Snooker Championship leaps 32 places in the rankings, reaching the Top 20 for the first time ever.
  • Buzz around the ATP World Tour Finals, Scottish Premiership, International Triathlon World Cup and NBA Basketball places all four events amongst the best year-on-year improvers in this year’s report.
